Behind the Name “HanLin”
HanLin in traditional Chinese characters are two words – 翰林
The first character pronounced “han” in Chinese pinyin. It means writing brush or writing pen.
The second is pronounced “lin” and it means forest.
Together the two characters refer to academics employed as imperial secretaries from the Chinese Tang dynasty onwards, forming the great Hanlin Imperial Academy.
The Hanlin Imperial Academy was an academic and administrative institution of higher learning founded in the 8th century China by Tang’s Emperor Xuanzong in the capital Chang’an. The academy’s name has also been translated as “College of Literature” and “Academy of the Forest of Pencils.” Membership in the academy was confined to an elite group of scholars, who performed secretarial and literary tasks for the royal court.
I loved the image of “Forest of Pencils” to imply professionals who seek higher levels of learning. So I decided to use the academic’s name for my center to teach the integrative medical approaches I adopted to treat my patients for the last twenty-five years. The formal name of the center is HanLin Center for Integrative Medicine (www.HanLinCIM.com).
The HanLing CIM’s vision is to mimic what the ancient Chinese academy tried to accomplish, brought to the modern age with TCM 4.0.
I aim to establish a center to educate acupuncturists and health practitioners about the science and benefits of PBM therapy in healing, especially with chronic pain conditions in soft tissue injury.
In addition to integrating PBM/Laser Acupuncture into TCM care, I wish to educate TCM clinicians about modern Lifestyle Medicine and Functional Medicine to form the basis of the unique integrative medical model that HanLin CIM teaches for the new generations of TCM clinicians to treat many challenging modern medical conditions successfully and in the meantime make a decent living.
